Ask Caroline

Published: November 30th, 2008

By Caroline Hack

Q. Dear Caroline: I have been married to my husband for seven years. He had a dog that he loved which died, and I waited a long time before suggesting that we get a new one. My husband gradually agreed with me and we bought Sally. Sally is a great dog, but since she would whine at night, my husband brought her in to sleep at the foot of the bed. We got another dog six months ago, and now BOTH dogs sleep in the bed and I sleep on the couch. My husband obsesses about the dogs, cooking for them and scheduling our days around their habits. I complain, but he just tells me that he’s always been that way, and it was my fault that we got a dog in the first place. What can I do? Read the rest of this entry »

Responding to recent criticism about the town’s “Residents Only” rule for admittance into any of Clarence’s town parks, Scott Bylewski tried to clear the air. Chilly weather in new city surprises local weatherman.

Chesley McNeil is having a tough time embracing his new life as a weather anchor in Atlanta Georgia. First, he nearly died of hypothermia in an attempt to beat the rush of ice fishermen on Lake Erie. Upon returning home, he was nearly blinded while working on a modified gas-powered barometer in his home weather studio. Read the rest of this entry »

This is the second in a series of articles entitled “Alcoholic in Buffalo: “Twelve Steps To The Next Bar”

When I first enter Hecker’s Bar on Hertel, the first thing I notice is that nobody turns their head to see me saunter shakily through the front door. ‘Touchdown,’ I think to myself, as I sidle up to the bar next to a jaundiced-looking gentleman dressed in an oversized, coffee-stained raincoat. It’s a gray Tuesday afternoon and I am visiting this landmark North Buffalo tavern that I have heard about for years but have never actually patronized. Read the rest of this entry »

Larry Flesler

The tradition of football on Thanksgiving Day started in 1920, the Detroit Lions have played every Thanksgiving since 1925, the Dallas Cowboys since 1966. I have many fond memories of watching games on Thanksgiving Day, none more vivid than in 1976 when the Bills lost to Detroit 27-14 despite O J’s 273 yards rushing. Read the rest of this entry »

Published: November 27th, 2008

By Frank Brutus

The New York State Department of Transportation has issued a dramatic proposal to eliminate the Buffalo Skyway by the year 2019. Instead of demolishing the structure, as a recent urban renewal commission has suggested, The DOT’s plan calls for raising the City of Buffalo itself to match the highest point of the 110-foot tall Skyway. CHESLEY McNEIL FOUND ALIVE!!!

Published: November 25th, 2008

Local weatherman found clinging to driftwood closely resembling Willard Scott. Injures face, head upon returning home.

The local media and viewing audience breathed a huge sigh of relief today, after Channel 2 weatherman, Chesley McNeil was found floating in Lake Erie, about 100 yards from the shore near the town of Angola. Hopes for the rescue of McNeil had disappeared, after searches turned up no evidence that his ice fishing vessel, “The Dopp-Lure 2000” stayed afloat. McNeil was in fair condition, suffering from hypothermia and dehydration. That condition was downgraded to serious, after a weather instrument mishap in his home weather studio sent a flaming barometer crashing into his face. Read the rest of this entry »

DREADED BLISS

Q. Dear Caroline: I was appalled when I found out that the wedding of my brother’s daughter was a complete lie! Apparently, the real groom backed out of the nuptials a few weeks before the Big Day, but they decided to go on with the “ceremony” and reception anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

Slagger’s: Run by an authentic Irish alcoholic

This is the first of a series of articles entitled “Alcoholic in Buffalo: Twelve Steps To The Next Bar”

Welcome to the first leg of my exciting journey that chronicles the ups and downs of my severe drinking problem. When I stepped into Slagger’s Irish Pub on Mississippi Street, I found myself right at home in the company of others who have an inability to stop chugging drink after alcoholic drink. The restaurant is located about 10 wobbly steps from the HSBC Arena so its perfect to tie one on before a Sabres tilt or after a Bandits game (plan for extra travel time if you have to crawl).
