School Chief Proposes Solution For Next Year’s Late Start

Buffalo School Superintendent James Williams has proposed adding an eighth day to the school week next year in an attempt to break the impasse between the School Board and the Buffalo Teacher’s union regarding next year’s school calendar.

“We could call it Funday. Or maybe Chillday,” said the Superintendent. “It would be the day after Sunday so that these struggling kids can get ready to do their best on the annual state assessments. But Chillday would only exist for the duration of the school year. I don’t want to confuse the teachers by having the extra day ruin their summer vacations in July and August, when I am busy working in my office downtown like the rest of modern America.”

Williams and Phil Rumore have been locked in a pitched public relations battle as the School chief desperately tries to get the president of the Teachers Union to agree to opening school before the late-occurring Labor Day in 2009. Rumore’s response to the Williams proposal was less than enthusiastic.

“Adding an eighth day to the school week simply means that the jack-booted thugs who are referred to as ’students’ by the ignorant Mr. Wiliams will have an extra 7 hours each week to kick, maim and pull the hair of the thousands of weary and underpaid teachers that are employed in the poorly-lit and dangerous Buffalo Public Schools.”

Rumore wondered aloud why the Superintendent hasn’t already imposed the additional day on the bruised and battered teachers in the district. “Maybe he could call it ‘ScrewTheTeachersLegalAndBindingContractDay.’ Or just simply ‘MyWayDay.’ Because that’s how he’s done everything as the Buffalo Schools Superintendent. His way. Until an actual judge has to methodically explain the American system of law to Mr. Williams and his team of overpaid lawyers. At which point the whole shenanigan becomes an expensive error in the Superintendent’s judgement for which the taxpayers are forced to foot the bill.”

Williams was gratified to hear that Rumore had his own suggestions for the name of the extra day. “MyWayDay wouldn’t be at the top of my list,” he said. “But I think Philday has a nice ring to it. Don’t you?”

This idea is idiotic and nonsensical. You cannot simply change the calendar to “add” and extra day to the week. After Sunday it will be “Funday” for public schools and Monday for the rest of the world. Then by making the following day Monday, children will actually feel foolish to have no idea what the real day is when they think it’s Thursday and the rest of world knows that it is Sunday. This will not help any children out as the idea lacks any logic to begin with.

Nicholas, good point. Maybe you can come up with a better idea while you’re studying for your 4th grade new york state achievement tests.
